Introduction [Nov. 10th, 2008|04:34 pm]

[Current Music |The hum of the fridge and the snore of my baby.]

Hello. My name is Yael and I am the mom to Shira (7 weeks). She was 6 weeks early and we are working through the issues that come with early babies. Right now I'm just trying to get into a routine with her (though she is so clearly the boss of me). Lately she hasn't been getting a good "sleep" unless it's while I'm out with her and she's in the car-seat or sleeping in my arms (making it hard to do anything but sit around). Sure, you say, "try a baby bjorn and wear her about" but even with that I've got to put my hand directly on her back to keep her quiet. How early did the clinginess start for you? Some folks have suggested that it's a premie thing - they need the physical contact to grow. I really don't believe that. Then again, we have had nursing issues and she is now regretfully a fully formula baby. Then again, it could be a growth spurt. We got to the pediatrician on Friday.
Any ideas in the meantime?

Teaching Torah [Sep. 18th, 2008|02:13 pm]
A Community For Jewish Parenting

Discussion Question:

How do you (as a family) teach your children Torah? At what age did you start? Are your children enrolled in formal programs like religious school? Do you incorporate words of Torah into your home? How? What materials do you use?

Jewish Baby Stuff [Sep. 11th, 2008|03:27 pm]
A Community For Jewish Parenting

The last entry got me thinking about this.

I'm almost 22 weeks pregnant, so I'm thinking about nursery themes, baby toys, blankets, clothes, that kind of thing. Does anyone know any sources for Jewish-themed stuff? I've seen a few individual items here and there (but would appreciate hearing of more), but I've never seen a whole nursery, for example, with a Jewish theme. I take that back. I've seen Noah's Ark plenty, but none that really looked that good to me.

Kids Jewish Toys [Sep. 9th, 2008|10:53 am]

[Current Music |David Bowie - I would be your slave]

My wife came across Kidkraft toys.

We can only speak in regards to the ones we have, but of the play sets we do have, we have found them really quite amazing, we got them from Amazon.com. they are about $25 each.

We have the Shabbos set

Chanukah set

Rosh Hashana Set

and the Pessach Set

The Pessach set is by far the best one they have it really is quite amazing and is definitely worth the $30 it cost. and yes, that is a little bottle of "Manachevitz"

All of the holiday sets come with a clothe bag that everything fits into for storage.

Ru uses the Shabbos set every week to "bench licht".

PJ Library [Sep. 9th, 2008|01:34 pm]
A Community For Jewish Parenting
This community was a wonderful idea! Thanks so much to geminigirl, sonsah, and stickylatex!!

So, I just wanted to pass on a website for a program called the PJ Library. Basically you can enroll your kid and they will send you a different jewish-themed book every month for FREE! I enrolled my daughter in it a few months ago and she gets so excited when she gets her books in the mail. They're really nice books for Jewish kids! I don't think it's in every city but there are quite a few locations that offer the service.

Here is the website if you want to check it out:

I'm in no way affiliated with this organization, I just wanted to pass this on to other Jewish parents because I know I was thrilled when I heard about it.

"Kids! I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!" - Bye Bye Birdie [Sep. 8th, 2008|04:12 pm]
A Community For Jewish Parenting

So, since the initiative has been taken to make this community, I will take the initiative to make the first post.

What kids do you have?/When are you expecting?

My wife Pester and I have a 2 1/2 year old girl and a 3 month old boy.

*edit* our daughter's name is Ruth Khava, not to be confused with her cousin Ruth Chava who was born just over 2 years before her and in the same month, both of whom are named after my mother who died after a very long battle with cancer.

Our son is Joseph Daniel, named after my paternal Grandfather and my wife's great great uncle.

Introducing A Community For Jewish Parenting [Sep. 8th, 2008|05:32 pm]
A Community For Jewish Parenting

This community is a place to discuss everything involved in building a Jewish home for one's children. Membership is open to anyone raising a Jewish child, whether or not they themselves (or their partners) are Jewish.

Possible topics of discussion could include, well, anything and everything! What are good Jewish children's books for age x? How do you handle Christmas or Halloween? Bar/Bat Mitzvah ideas and discussion. What about issues with non-Jewish friends and family? How to handle people trying to convert your kid? What makes your child feel connected to Judaism if you don't live in a large Jewish community, or if you don't have Jewish family/friends? What activities did you decide your child needed, even if affording them was a stretch, and what did you decide they could do without? That kind of thing, but anything else you can think of that's unique to parenting a Jewish child.

Your moderators are geminigirl, sonsah, and stickylatex. We will be introducing ourselves shortly. In the meantime, please post an introduction of yourself and tell us about your Jewish family!
